Baby Photography

Today I played photographer for two sets of friends.  First, Luke and Marianne asked me to take some pictures of their daughter Ainsley’s baptism.  It was a good opportunity to use my new telephoto lens and to develop my photography skills a bit.  It was very different taking photos of an event as it occurs as opposed to set pictures, etc.  It was interesting trying to time photos and anticipate what was going to happen to get good pictures.  It was a little difficult to deal with the lack of lighting and taking pictures from a distance without the picture blurring a bit.  Some of the pictures we a little blurry, but I got some good ones as well.  Here are just a few:

Then after the service I went to visit Krystal, Jesus, and their new son Jacob Andrew.  He was born last night around 11:30 at 7 pounds 14 ounces.  He’s a really cute baby and Krystal and Jesus are both doing well (albeit, tired).  Beth and I are really happy for the Gonzalez’s and are really excited to get to know Jacob.  Here are a few pictures snapped at the hospital today:

My 25th Birthday Party

With Beth’s 25th birthday coming up soon I was reminded that I still had yet to post about my 25th birthday blowout.  Beth decided that she wanted to throw a pretty big party for my 25th so we decided to get the party catered by El Guero Canelo (one of our favorite Mexican restaurants here in Tucson).  They provided carne asada, diced cabbage, tortillas, limes, cucumbers, sauteed onions, roasted peppers and onions and a few types of salsa.  Just writing about it makes my mouth water.  If we haven’t taken any of you that have come to visit then we will definitely go next time you are out here.

Beth invited a bunch of people and about 20 were able to make it.  I think we found out how many people our small house is able to hold.  We weren’t quite at capacity but it was pretty close.  The food was great and it was fun to have a bunch of people over at the house (it was the first big group we’ve had over to the new house).

We ended the evening by playing a couple rounds of Mafia.  This game is always a classic (unless you get killed first); too bad you need a decent number of people to play.  If you’re not familiar there are some rules here.

The night was awesome.  It was probably one of the best birthday parties I’ve ever had.  Oh, and did I mention that Beth made my favorite Funfetti cupcakes?

San Carlos Part 2

I’m sorry I have gotten behind on posts.  I’ll update with some past events soon.  But for now I’m going to go ahead with our San Carlos Trip from this past weekend.

We left on Friday around 3 with the Jankowskis, Ashley, the three dogs and a boat.  The trip progressed smoothly up until the permit station.  The permit station is always a bone of contention.  Legally we are supposed to essentially sign in and out of the country stating that we are only there for vacation, but since no one seems to care about it, it seems to be just a needless waste of time.  However, in the interest of following the law we stop for 30 mins to an hour for the permit.  This time we also needed to get a permit for the boat since apparently sneaking boats into Mexico is a big deal.  Sadly for Ryan and Yunuen permitting the boat is overly complicated and the necessary information is not easily determined.  So after approximately 2 1/2 hours we were able to continue on our way.  It was really hot and waiting around wasn’t fun, but I’m sure it wasn’t nearly as annoying as dealing with the permitting people.

Anyway, we did make it down to the beach and were able to do a little late night swimming.  On Saturday we pretty much just hung out at the house and relaxed on the beach. Ryan and I played a little Bocci ball and I got some reading done.

That night we went out to eat at Pancho Villa’s Restaurant.  It was probably one of the best meals that Beth and I have had in a while.  We followed this by going first to a bar in Guaymas and then to a club in San Carlos.  The club was fun and it had been a really long time since Beth or I had been dancing.  It was a fun (and late) night and although the majority of the music wasn’t that great it was great to see Yunuen and her brothers belting out some of their old favorites at the end of the night.  I would equate it to a club playing Bon Jovi or Journey just before closing and everyone just singing at the top of their lungs.

After the late night we mostly took it easy and relaxed on the beach and made a trip out to the Estuary.  We got a shock collar for Walcott due to his antics the last time we were at the beach.  I was able to spend some time with him on it in the morning before anyone was really on the beach.  After just 30 mins and only two really good shocks he seemed to catch on and I was able to walk with him without a leash down the beach and back twice (approximately 2 miles).  This is really encouraging and will hopefully continue.

That evening we headed down to downtown Guaymas to the marina which serves a a kind of city square.  It was cool to see so many families just walking around and enjoying the evening.  It really gives a sense of community that is definitely lacking in most areas of the US.  It would be great if our culture would pick up some of these characteristics.  Also there were dancing fountains (think of the Bellagio in Vegas) that were fun to watch.

img_6583

The next morning we were planning on leaving.  Now since the boat had some issues we had to take the boat to get repaired and the guy that was fixing it told us that we could pick it up at noon on Monday.  However, he did not answer his phone when we called that morning.  After waiting a couple hours Ryan and Yunuen went to see if the boat was still at the shop.  Luckily it was there, however to get it back took enlisting the police, the shop that referred him to us and numerous hours.  Due to the time delay, we decided that it would be better to delay our return until the morning.  So all of us were able to call or email our respective people that we needed to tell that we were going to miss the next day of work.  It was sad that the majority of the extra day was spent expecting to leave at a moment’s notice, but we still found some time in the evening for some fun, including a side splitting game of telephone pictionary.

The trip home was right on par with the rest of the trip.  We left at about 9:30 and after having to unload all of our bags at a military checkpoint, we were able to make it back to the dreaded permit station.  There they needed to check that we were leaving with the same boat that we came in with.  And even though everything was the exact same, due to some supposed missing plate and missing 4 numbers they held us there for about an hour before sending us to the back of the line to do it one more time.  We then proceeded to the border where we had a reasonable 1 1/2 hour wait.  When we finally made it back to Tucson, we were literally just a few blocks away from Ryan’s house and his clutch went out. We were able to coast off to a side road and Ryan and I hiked back to his house to get the Jeep and his truck which we used to haul back the boat and Rodeo, respectively. Overall the trip home took about 10 hours (it should be about 5-6).  Well needless to say this weekend was somewhat of a comedy of errors. Luckily we all made it back (and with the boat as well) and despite the craziness the weekend was fun and we look forward to the next time we head down there.

I’ll end with a cool picture that Beth took while Ryan and I were asking our bosses to let us off another day.

Goose Egg

By Beth’s firm request I title this post “Goose Egg.”  It has become somewhat of an affectionate nickname for me after this Saturday.  For the backstory…. after a morning of biking with Tim and Dave I came back home to get some work done around the house.  I have been working on getting the back yard ready to plant grass and so I continued digging up the old broken sprinkler system.  I had been working my way down the line with a pick and before I realized it I found myself under the clothesline.  So after swinging the pick overhead I felt it catch on the line and watched it as it slung back toward my forehead.  I was lucky that it rotated somewhat so that the sharp end didn’t come back at me.  Instead, I got the flat metal side where it attaches to the handle.  It didn’t feel to good and after a few minutes of laying on the ground I went inside to surprise Beth.  But it didn’t take long to get back out into the yard to finish some things up before the England – US World Cup game.  The pictures below are from Beth wanting to document the injury.

While I watched the game, Beth made some awesome oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies for Krystal’s Baby Shower.  They were pretty awesome and I was sad that most were taken to the shower.  I know Beth had a good time at the shower though and we’re pretty excited about their baby coming soon.

New Lens

After going to San Carlos and getting to shoot some photos with Ryan’s telephoto lens I started looking for some online.  I bid pretty low on a Canon 75 – 300mm f/4.0-5.6 EFIII   lens on ebay (never thinking I would get it for that price).  Surprisingly, I did win and the lens came in today.  Hopefully, Beth and I will get a chance to use it soon.

Saturday around the House

Beth and I got up early this morning after a late night showing of “Bottle Rocket” in Nick and Betsy’s backyard. We worked for a few hours in the yard before it got too hot.  We were able to clean up a little  and shovel about 15 wheelbarrows full of rock out to the side yard.  I also made a trip to Home Depot and got new pads for our swamp cooler.  We’re still looking at upgrading to AC but its pricey so we’re trying to figure out the best plan.  I took Walcott to Home Depot (which he loves) and although they technically have a rule against it, the store employees all really love the dogs that come in.  I then ran through Chick-fil-a and picked up a free lunch we received that last time we went there.  It seems we are always getting free Chick-fil-a items (which I won’t complain about).  Also, since I went through the drive-thru with Walcott they gave him his helping of chicken nuggets as well.  For those of you who don’t know about this… Chick-fil-a will refrigerate some of the chicken tenders that have been out for a while and give them to dogs in the drive-thru.  Walcott seems to know when we get to Chick-fil-a and always perks up.  Beth and I then took a trip up to the Mac Store to get her computer checked out and stopped at AJ’s for a drink where I got an awesome ginger beer by Ginger People.

ginger_people-logoI have been kind of obsessed with ginger lately so it was great.  On the way home we swung by the new REI that just opened a few weeks ago.  I love that store and could probably spend a ton of money.  I picked up some toe clips for my new bike (the replacement for the stolen one).  We’re now looking forward to a salad and a nice relaxing night at home.

San Carlos

This past weekend we took our (now seemingly annual) Memorial Day trip to San Carlos.  It is always a welcome retreat after the end of the semester.  It is also a nice change of scenery at the beginning of the hot summer months in Tucson.  Beth and I really enjoy the trip and it is sad that the dangers of travel in Mexico are greatly exaggerated by the American media.

This year we stayed with Yunuen’s brother who has a house in Guaymas instead of our normal condos around the bay in San Carlos.  It was nice to keep the cost down and it was fun to be more immersed in the Mexican culture instead of the Americanized resort condos.  Also, since his house is right on the beach there was really no downside.

san-carlos-10_2_16

This year we went with Ryan and Yun as well as two of their friends Chris and Brit.  Traveling with people is always a great way to get to know them and we always come back from this trip feeling a lot closer the the people we went with.

san-carlos-10_2_23Walcott, Scout and Tila also came.  Traveling with dogs is always an adventure, but they really are a ton of fun.  They also seem to really enjoy the beach.  We left Tucson around 1:30 on Friday and after a quick stop in Hermosillo for some tacos we got into Guaymas and spent the evening on the porch just enjoying the nice ocean breeze.  The next morning Beth and I woke up early to try to get Walcott some exercise on the beach.  He is definitely doing better than he was last year, but he can still get distracted by other dogs on the beach and just keep running.  Twice this trip I had to chase him down the beach to bring him back.  It is extremely frustrating, but I guess I only have us to blame for not being better about being consistent in our training.  All impromptu 1 mile sprints down the beach aside, Walcott is a source of a lot of entertainment for us.

san-carlos-10_2_01When we didn’t want to be dealing with Walcott we would tie him up on the back porch.  He loved to tangle his paw up in the hammock then act like he didn’t know how to get it out.

san-carlos-10_1_1Later on Saturday we chartered a boat to go out to see the sunset.  The boat ride was fun and we got to see some really nice houses out on the rocky outcrops.  I couldn’t help but think about how the area would be different if it was a US city.  It was kind of nice to see undeveloped land around the area.  It definitely added to the beauty.  There was an upper level of the boat that was cool to climb up to as it gave a panoramic view.  Beth seemed to simply like the climb up while bouncing on the waves.

san-carlos-10_2_08

After a nice devotional and time of prayer on Sunday morning we left for snorkeling on a new beach recommended by Gary of Gary’s Dive Shop down in San Carlos.  The snorkeling was better than in years past, with lots of wildlife.  We had to navigate around a jungle of seaweed, and while peering into the shadows of the swaying vines I couldn’t help but think of a scene from some scary shark movie where all of a sudden you see an extremely large shark just swim beneath you. We then left for a late lunch at JJ’s.  The fish tacos there are definitely the best I have ever had.  The atmosphere there was also very relaxing.

san-carlos-10_2_24That evening we went up the the overlook and got some cool photos of the moon (which was almost full).  Chris, Ryan and I also had some fun double exposing photos.  Hopefully I can get the photos from Ryan and post them here.  Otherwise you should check out his post (which I’m sure will be coming soon) at his blog.  Monday morning before leaving we spent another morning playing with the dogs in the ocean.  We were also able to catch a few crabs and let the dogs play with them (a favorite pastime).

san-carlos-10_2_33The ride back seemed fairly fast, besides the ~2 hour wait at the border.  And although the trip was relaxing, there is always something to be said for sleeping in your own bed.  For more pictures, check out the Photos page.

Wedding

Waiting in the Jackson airport waiting on my overbooked flight I decided I should catch up with the blog from this weekend.  I’ll try to remember what I can, but I’m sure Beth will correct some things, so maybe check back again for updates.

Friday morning we rode up to Starkville with my brother and met up with Andrea, Richard and their daughter Charlotte at Bulldog Deli.  The Deli (as we call it) it very important to Beth and I, above and beyond their awesome food.  This is where we had our first date back in December of 04 and also where we went to eat before getting engaged.  So needless to say we always try to eat there when we are lucky enough to make it back to State. The Cuban Panini is my personal favorite.

051710_01

We then walked around campus a bit to see some of the changes.  It’s amazing how much can change in just a few years.  There are new buildings and updated buildings, but overall the campus remains the same beautiful campus that I remember. The Chapel of Memories (below) is where I proposed to Beth and then below that is the Chemical Engineering building that I spent so much time in as an undergrad.

051710_02

051710_04

Andrea, Richard and Charlotte also got a picture there as this was Richard and Charlotte’s first trip back to MSU.

051710_03

We then left for Columbus for me to pick up my tux and to get checked in to the hotel.  The rehersal and rehersal dinner were that night.  Beth and I had the pecan crusted catfish and an awesome dessert of creme brulee.  The night was a lot of fun with a hilarious slideshow and some pretty entertaining toasts as well (especially Allison’s mom’s for those of you who were there).

051710_05

051710_06

The guys then hung out afterward at Allison’s family cabin in Sturgis.  It was great to get to catch up with some of them that I hadn’t seen in years.  The cabin was nice and perched on a grassy ridge with a small lake on either side surrounded by woods.  It was just the kind of landscape I have come to miss in Arizona.  We traveled back the next morning in time to change and get to the church for pictures.  The ceremony was nice and we ended the pictures amazingly quickly afterward.  We then took a bus over to the reception at a lodge about 20 minutes away.  It was extremely nice (a really cool venue) and the food was amazing.  There were crab cakes and a mashed potato bar with an awesome crawfish sauce just to name a few.  There was also a good local band that was a lot of fun to dance to.  I also got to catch up with some other fraternity brothers that came to the wedding.  The night was a lot of fun and the bus ride home was interesting to say the least.

051710_07

The next morning we got up for breakfast at the hotel and to see Andrea and Richard off.  Hopefully we’ll be heading up that way around Christmas and get to hang out with them again.

051710_08

We then headed back to Starkville to meet up with Farmer, Jenna, Begonia, Haylee and Stevie for a lunch at City Bagel (another of the restaurants that we always love to hit).  It was good to hang out with them, as, except for the absence of Grant, it was just like old times.  We also got to talk to Jenna and Haylee (Farmer and Begonia’s girlfriends, respectively) and get to know them better, which was nice since we really didn’t know them very much.

051710_09

Lastly, before heading back to Jackson we drove through the Cotton District, which was a great area to live at State (Beth lived there for a year) and had cool old houses and shops as well as a outdoor festival with numerous bands once a year.  This kind of architectural uniqueness is definitly missed in Tucson.  Tucson has its own, but I am still very partial to this style.

Award Night

We travelled back to Mississippi for a wedding this weekend and were able to get back in town a little early to spend some time with my family.  Even though we had to leave the house at 3:30 this morning, it has been really nice to be able to be here.  My mom picked Beth and I up at the airport and we spent the afternoon with my nephew Owen.  It’s sad, but we have only been able to see him once (last Christmas) since he was born in April of last year.  It was a lot of fun to just hang out and play with him as we were able to really get to see some of his personality.  Owen is such a fun kid.  He just seems to find joy is all sorts of things and he just seems to want to get you to join in.  I do feel like that happy kids are such a reflection of the parents and the attitude they have toward their children. I hope that one day our children will have as much fun in our everyday life.  Here are a few pictures from the afternoon:

Since we were here tonight, we were also able to go to an award banquet for my Dad.  He was named Engineer of the Year for the US Army Engineering Research and Development Center.  I was really glad to be able to be here for this and I know that he hates being the center of attention, but he deserves it.  Congrats Dad, you’ve really been an inspiration to me.

Busy Season

So as the semester is wrapping up, the days have been pretty busy for Beth and me.  I have been to two conferences in the past three weeks and Beth had a week where she had 5 presentations to give in 4 days.  Needless to say we’re looking forward to summer and at least a couple days of vacation before getting back to work.

We have been very lucky to have a few more visitors though.  This includes Butch and Sherry Snyder, two of Beth’s family’s friends from back in Meridian (now in Tuscaloosa).  It was great to get to see them as they are good friends of the Marantos and I believe that I have only met Sherry once and never Butch.  We were able to have lunch with them at Beyond Bread (which is always nice) and spend a little time catching up.  Maybe we’ll get to see them next time we’re back in Mississippi.

050810_1

After this a good friend of mine from Mississippi State, Adam Farmer, came into town.  Sadly, he was in town for his uncle’s funeral, but it was still nice to get to hang out with him.  We realized that we hadn’t hung out essentially since our wedding.  I’m also looking forward to seeing him again at a wedding we’re going to next weekend.  Hopefully next time he comes out we could do some hiking.

050810_2

Finally, as the semester classes ended on Wednesday (also coinciding with Cinco de Mayo), we have enjoyed a few nights of hanging out with friends and Beth has been able to take a day off (something she has not gotten nearly enough of with her crazy program).  Last night we went over to Luke and Marianne’s house for a party for Karissa.  She finished her MBA program not long ago and I know we are all looking forward to her being able to do things again.  So last night we had a nice baked potato bar and taco salad dinner and then played a game of Tripoly.  For those of you not familiar with Tripoly, it is a game my family has played as we grew up and one that I particularly loved.  Since being in Arizona I have made a couple of Tripoly boards including the one you will see in the following photos.  A quick overview of the rules are here, but note that we use variations 1 and 2, because otherwise the game is just too easy.  Maybe sometime I can post all our rules. And don’t worry about it being complicated… it seems that Caleb is getting the hang of it really quickly.

050810_3

Beth also wanted me to put this picture up that she caught of me (with an extremely awkward expression) while explaining the game.  Also note that Ben seems to be pretty angry about the entire situation.
