Tucson Visit

We were able to visit Tucson in February for the first time since we left at the end of November.  I cannot even begin to describe how good it was to see everyone! We are thankful that we are still so close so these visits are possible.  Matt and Dana were extremely kind to host us for the weekend.  Thank you friends!! Jeff had Monday off of work so we were able to have plenty of time to catch up with everyone.  We were even able to worship at Rincon on Sunday.  A main reason for the visit over this weekend was to coincide with Ben and Lis and their boys in Tucson as well as to catch Ryan and Yunuen in town. It was amazing to be back together with so many of our good friends all in one place! Jeff says with good friendships, when you get back together you pick up right where you left off.  This was definitely the case!  Only wish we had taken more pictures…

Here is Clara with her newest friend Tiago, Ben and Lis’s youngest.  We were thrilled to meet their youngest two that were born since their move to NM.

Six Month Pictures

Six months! Hard to believe.  Clara was almost crawling at this point- not for lack of trying!  These are my favorite month pictures so far.  These were taken in the short term rental that we are in right now in Scottsdale.  When it’s time to take pictures for the month, Jeff always thinks I go overboard on the amount of photos, and he is right.  But, this is the result!  Love our sweet Clara bug!

Five Month Pictures

These were taken shortly after Christmas at Nana and Pops.  We so enjoyed our time in Mississippi! The best pictures we took this day were when Pops walked in and Clara just beamed.  She knows he is a special guy already!

Christmas 2012

We were able to spend just over a month back in MS before heading to Phoenix to start my new job. It was great to get such an extended period with family and to let them get to know Clara better. Since we are so behind at posting we are just going to summarize this Christmas in pictures. Hope you like it…

DC Visit

During our month back in MS we decided to take a trip up to Washington DC to visit 2 sets of friends from Tucson who now live up there. It was a great opportunity as I had  never been to DC and we hadn’t seen some of our best friends in quite a while. We somewhat split the trip between the Bigelows and the Grimes.

It was our first time flying with Clara and we were a bit nervous, but luckily we had direct flights both ways and Clara did well. Only a little bit of crying, not too bad overall. We arrived to DC and met Mary at the airport and headed out to Annapolis. We had a great time getting to catch up with Beau and Mary:  getting to see the upgrades to their house, seeing Beau’s massive board game collection and enjoying a karate comic book game for Xbox Kinect (sounds ridiculous but was pretty awesome, Clara even got in the mix). We also got to go downtown for “Midnight Madness” which is an event where the shops stay open late and have free giveaways and deals.  It was freezing, but we had a great time exploring the beautiful downtown Annapolis (Mary was a great tour guide).

On Saturday we all drove into DC to meet with Natalie and Liam. We met on the National Mall and strolled past the Washington Monument to the Smithsonians. There were so many I wanted to attend but we had to narrow it down to just a few. We went to the American History museum first. The transportation exhibit was great, but the best part by far was the display of the Star Spangled Banner, the actual flag about which the song was written.  While not necessarily the most “flag-waving” American out there, the scale of the flag alone was awe inspiring, not to mention all the history wrapped up into it. Clara did extremely well during all of this.  She ate wherever we were, whether it be the cafeteria of the Smithsonian or the burger place we went for lunch. She spent most of the remaining time looking something like this:

After lunch we strolled around DC to a farmer’s market and through some old neighborhoods with some great architecture. It reminded me of how much better the houses are in the east. AZ just has too many cookie cutter neighborhoods. That evening Beau and Mary had to return for a church function so Natalie, Liam, Beth, Clara and I continued our tour of the monuments with the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam war memorials as well as the Lincoln monument. Normally cynical about these type of things, it was somewhat surprising to me how much I enjoyed it. The artistic elements and historical depictions and reflections were a real pleasure.

The next morning we took the Metro down to Alexandria to see where Liam and Natalie live. Old town Alexandria was a charming place with quaint streets lined with shops and restaurants and we were able to visit a small French creperie (where Beth got what she claimed was one of her favorite meals of all time). We also strolled the waterfront which offered a cool view of downtown DC.

We then headed back to their house for dinner which was great. It was fun to see their place and catch up on life as well as for them to get to meet Clara and see her do something other than sleep. Not that I am complaining, but her 8 hour nap pictured above in the streets of Alexandria just isn’t her modus operandi.

Our last day in town was Monday so Beau and Liam had to work. Luckily Mary and Natalie were available to come meet us back in DC and explore the museums a bit more. We had saved the Natural History Museum for last as it was the one I looked forward to most (mostly because of the dinosaur exhibit). I remember as a kid always wanting to get to see the giant T-rex but most of all, my personal favorite, Allosaurus. Beth and I had also promised our nephew Owen (who now has a similar fascination with dinosaurs) that we would take a picture with the T-Rex for him. I also snapped a quick picture of all the girls with the Brontosaurus.

After the museum we headed over to Georgetown to explore and go to a cupcake place that Mary raved about. It was called Georgetown Cupcakes and apparently is the subject of a TV show on TLC. Georgetown was a cool place that reminded me a lot of Barcelona or other European towns with the narrow streets and older architecture. It was a great place to spend our final hours in DC.

Although we were tentative about traveling with Clara, we are extremely glad we went. Time spent with good friends is never regretted and we definitely miss all of them out here in AZ. Maybe someday we can all end up in the same place. If not, we’ll just have to plan to meet up regularly.

Four Month Pictures

Clara turned four months old at the end of November.  With all of our moving, we were a little late taking the pictures.  These were taken shortly after we arrived in Mississippi.  Her hat was a gift from Jeff and me for Christmas.  We thought going to Mississippi and heading to D.C. in December warranted a winter hat.  We found this one on Etsy and were pretty pleased!

Leaving Our Beloved Tucson

Jeff and I have been talking about having a wine and cheese party for a while.  The plan was to buy one expensive bottle of wine and have everyone bring an under $20 bottle. We hoped to see if anyone could pick out the expensive wine. We decided that Jeff’s graduation and our farewell to Tucson was a perfect time to have our party. So, we finally made it happen in November just a few weeks before we left for Mississippi.  I have to say, we have some wonderful friends!

Jeff covered the 8 bottles we used for the tasting with aluminum foil and then I numbered them so no one had any knowledge of which one was the expensive bottle. We also enjoyed our favorite, El Guero Canelo, for dinner. We started this tradition of catering Guero for Jeff’s 25th birthday party, and you can now find Guero at many Rincon Mountain functions. So good!

Thank you to Matt and Dana for helping us pull off the party! Dana is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to wine and even picked out the expensive wine for us. Love you guys!

img_0511

We were so glad to have Ryan and Yunuen at the party! These guys have been busy with new ventures in Mexico so it was a real treat to see them.

img_0512

And the results– we failed miserably! The majority of the group chose the cheapest wine (under $5) as their favorite.  Only 4 of 19 correctly picked out the expensive wine.  This only furthers my thoughts that wine from Trader Joe’s for under $15 is the way to go. Neither Jeff nor I can tell the difference!

Before leaving town, the Holleys graciously invited us to be a part of their family’s Thanksgiving. Clara was even able to wear her amazing outfit that Karissa made for her.  It has not been easy to be so far away from family these last several years, particularly on holidays, but we truly have found family in Tucson! Thank you Holleys!

Here are a few pictures from our last few days in Tucson. Thank you to our friends for your help packing. It was definitely a crazy exit!  We packed things in long term storage in the POD, things for short term storage that we might need once we arrived in Phoenix, and things that we could fit into our car for the month we spent in Mississippi. I am not sure we factored in how much extra time these things take when you have an almost 4 month old. Although exhausting, we finally made it out of town and arrived in Mississippi a few days later.

We have such mixed emotions leaving Tucson. Although starting a new job and moving to a new place is exciting, Tucson definitely feels like home to us.  We have grown so much during our time in Tucson after arriving only a few weeks after we were married. I start to tear up just thinking about all of the wonderful memories we have made during the last 5 years. Tucson was not a place we had always envisioned we would live but God blessed us richly with our church family at Rincon. Love you guys!!

Dissertation Defense

So after a solid 5 years the day had finally arrived. Although it is fairly certain by the time you get to this point, it is still rather stressful. I essentially get to stand up and present my last few years worth of research and then get it poked and prodded by both my peers and my committee consisting of my advisor and 2 other professors. I had invited a good number of people and quite a few were able to attend. The little room was standing room only!  Many people from my department came as well as Phil and Luke from Rincon and Jon Vandegeest made the trek across the street as well. I really appreciated having them all there. Then, after about and hour of presentation, 30 minutes of questions and another 2 hours of questions and discussion with my committee, it was official!

img_0454

It was pretty surreal. It was hard to really grasp that it was all done. I think I’ve just now started to realize that I’m never going back to that. We had made great plans for Beth to be able to attend and to let Clara sleep in my office, but Clara just didn’t want to cooperate, so Beth got to hover outside in the hallway. Luckily we got to grab a relaxing lunch afterward with just our family. I was really thankful for all of the work Beth put in to getting snacks and drinks for the defense as well as getting herself and Clara there for the day.

img_0465

That night Beth and I made plans to do something we had been planning to do for quite some time. I got a tattoo and Beth got her nose pierced! We had debated it since our Spain trip (we didn’t do it then since Beth was pregnant) and decided that we wanted to get it done in Tucson.  We went to the Black Rose in downtown Tucson for Beth’s piercing, which went really fast.  We then had to go to their other location on 4th Ave to get my tattoo as all the artists at that location were booked up for the night.  It ended up being a little bit later night than we had planned, which made it interesting with Clara, but she did great.  The tattoo (which I’ll get a picture up of at some point) is of a cross inside of triangle. I chose this design as it was reminiscent of the picture that Ricky Jones (our RUF pastor at State) drew for me when describing the gospel. It represents the cross reaching down from the Godhead to man. It was the first time that I truly understood its power.

October 2012

A few pictures from October in Tucson:

Here is a picture of the video monitor.  When people ask about accessories for a baby… this is one thing we would recommend. Not the cheapest thing but really helps set you at ease.  Thank you Nana and Pops!

September 2012

So, it has been a long time! Also, I think I should note that this is my first blog post! Although I still hold that Jeff is the better writer, he has been rather busy lately so I may be taking over some of the narrating of the Rottman happenings. A lot has happened!  Here is just a brief recap of the last few months that we have neglected.

Here is Clara in her swaddle.  This was a huge help to us.  Initially, she would not have it.  We kept trying though and it became a definite necessity!

We had a visit from Memare and all took Clara for her first trip to the U of A.  First stop, Allegro, for the best gelato in town before walking to campus. Notice our Arizona gear…

We even wandered through all of the tailgates before a U of A football game.

Our first trip to the grocery store (just Clara and me) to Trader Joe’s, of course.  As you can see, Clara and her carseat take up most of the cart which makes shopping interesting.  We both made it unscathed!

Clara, Daddy, and Mortimer the Moose while I was away at an amazing women’s bible study (which I miss so much now).  One of the few times I was out of the house without our little girl.  It definitely felt funny not to have her in tow.
